DESCRIPTION:Long before she became television’s first horror host and a cult icon of gothic glamour\, Maila Nurmi was a teenager navigating life in Astoria. Join the Clatsop County Historical Society on Thursday\, October 15\, for “Vampira’s Astoria\,” a fascinating exploration of the future screen legend’s formative years on Oregon’s North Coast. \nBest known as Vampira\, the darkly comic hostess of The Vampira Show and a memorable presence in Ed Wood’s cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space\, Nurmi lived in Astoria from 1939 to 1941\, graduated from Astoria High School\, worked for the Astoria Public Library’s bookmobile service\, attended dances at local halls\, and dreamed of a larger stage beyond the Columbia River. \nThe presentation complements the Clatsop County Historical Society’s popular Vampira Walking Tour\, which highlights sites associated with Nurmi throughout downtown Astoria. \nThe lecture will take place at Fort George Brewery’s Lovell Showroom\, 1483 Duane Street\, Astoria. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.; the program begins at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Minors are welcome when accompanied by an adult.
