Immigrants

Immigrant groups from all over the world came to Clatsop County and the Lower Columbia region to find work, escape famine or drought, join their relatives already in the area, and find new opportunities. The first immigrants to the area arrived in the early 1800s from the British Isles, Canada, and the United States. Immigration continued with large influxes of people from the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as Ireland, Germany, and China throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Smaller populations from countries such as India and Japan also made valuable contributions to the area. Our Immigrant Gallery explores the experiences of these diverse groups with a look at where they worked, their home lives, religious practices, and leisure activities.
